part one, page 11

just who is this sharon becker..?

jeremy says...

a bit of scenery

i won’t be shy:  i loves page 8.  kinna bursting into flames an’ her following curse are my favourite purple-moment thus far.  an’ that’s not all.  i actually think of this as the most marketable page to date.  if you check out the wall behind kinna an’ rory you can see two things:  one of them is the Better Than You tour poster first seen in kinna’s room in purple shoes; the other is this symbol…

mind the gap. it's got demons in it

’tis the logo for the demon-run train station.  i think it’d make a good t-shirt.  i also think the Better Than You poster would make a good t-shirt.  but more than that, i think kinna’s curse “F!” would make the best t-shirt, button, coffee mug, et cetera.

whaddya think?  anybody interested in some merch?

purple soul, the graphic novel (also, the prologue)

seven years ago, sequestered in a deep an’ dank basement, i doodled-up a skinny spikey-headed kid, a troublesome pig-tailed girl an’ a verry large demon who i’m sure meant no good at all.  not an ounce of good.  over the years, these characters didn’t really develope or change, the original story didn’t sway from its meager beginning.  an’ i wondered why’n i never got it off the ground.

it’s amazing what getting over yerself can accomplish.

just in the last year, this comic took on the newest of lifes.  i tossed alla my original notes and got back to day-dreamin’.  suddenly, rik and the others didn’t wanna just stick to the story: they wanted to eat bagels, smell flowers, cross mountains an’ foil the machinations of netherworldly fiends.  the world of garden opened wiiide up, an’ i wanted to run around in it.

come along on the adventure!  i can’t wait to see what happens.

(truly.  i’m only writin’ this thing about three pages at a time.)

purple shoes

so many changes in purple shoes!  really, you can chalk that up to the fact that it was written an’ drawn months and months after the other comics.  i produced a lotta other work in that time, in particular an unpublished strip called cabbages & kings where i adapted a funkier line to my drawin’ style, as well the humble beginnings of scenery.  oh, how background artwork taunted me!  i’d always wanted to draw forests an’ buildings an’ extras, but they ran when i tried to coax ‘em over.  it was with c&k that i learned it wasn’t the background, i was just a crappy cartoonist what didn’t wanna try anything new.  but that’s what learnin’s all about.

in future, i’d like to add even more to my repertoire.  shading, fer instance.  i’d also like to start hand-lettering, but i might save that for a smallish venue.

i toyed around with a few ideas for the shoes cover, but most of my sketches were based on a pin-up girl style, and the wife figured that might not be appropriate fer teenaged kinna.  i do like the version i finished with: coy, like kinna.

yes, they're cursed!

next week, the graphic novel begins!  purple soul!

restlessness compounded

gar!  i been incredibly restless these past few weeks, especially concerning purple soul and this site.  i’m feelin’ that once a week just ain’t enough.  that feeling, however, is compounded by the fact that i been next to useless at drawing lately.  blank pages just laughin’ at me…

i gotta bust my hump!  i just gotta!

wish me luck an’ inspiration, kids.  sned me some of that good mojo that’ll turn this site into somethin’ truly awesome.

a trip back in time

i was puttin’ together a ‘cover’ fer purple shoes when i noticed that i’d never posted the ‘cover’ artwork fer purple vase.  i also noticed that i neglected to post the demon an’ ghost covers with their original publishing date.  not reeeally sure why i did that.  anyway, i went back an’ re-published those covers with their original date.  i feel better about that, fer some reason.  honest, like.

also, you get the cover fer purple vase:

chock-full of evil!

more comicking fun next week!
